CANADIAN CEMETERY HOLTEN

HOLTEN

Holten

The Canadian cemetery in Holten, The Netherlands is one of the nicest cemeteries in the country. It is located in the woods and surrounded by trees. The road leading to the cemetery is a real forest road. On the cemetery 1355 Canadians are buried. Most of these men died during the liberation of The Netherlands and on their way through Germany.

The most special time to visit this cemetery is on Christmas night. The local community attends the ceremony at the cemetery on this most special day of the year. School children place candles at each grave marker and light them. We visited the cemetery on Christmas night 2010. We had a white Christmas which gave the ceremony a special touch.

If you ever have the chance of visiting this cemetery, please do so. And if you really want to have a memorable Christmas Night, go to the cemetery and attend the ceremony. Itís worth it!
