His father was Joseph Sam.

He had one sister, Cecilia M. and one brother, Joseph Sam jr. who was married to Mary . They lived on 513 Minersville Street, Pottsville PA.

On 13 Nov. 1944 was William decorated with the Silver Star for gallantry in action against the enemy in Germany this afternoon. Sam and the members of his tank crew were awarded for having knocked out two enemy tanks and a pillbox after their own tank had been disabled by fire from one of the German tanks.

On October 17 a tank commanded by Sgt. Archie Ross with T/4 Edgar G. Ireland, as driver; Cpl. Alva E. Beck, gunner; Pvt. William J. Sam, assistant gunner, and Pvt. Everett Lloyd, assistant driver, knocked out two enemy tanks and a pillbox after the tank had been immobilized by fire from one of the enemy tanks. When Maj. Gen. Clarence Huebner, Commanding General of the First U. S. Infantry Division, heard of the deed, he ordered a special ceremony at which he presented Silver Star awards to each member of the crew.

At 01 March 1945 came the message to the staff that one tank has disabled. Sgt. William J. Sam and Cpl. Orion P.Gill where killed by an enemy bazooka attack.

William is buried on 3 March at 1945 at 10.00 am in a temporary grave on Henri-Chapelle American War Cemetery, Plot WWW, Row 2, Grave 36.

He is re-buried and found his final place of rest on Plot D, Row 13, Grave 61.

William J. Sam is decorated by the Purple Heart with Silver Star.
